DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, September 12\, 2025 \n\nTime: 8:30 – 16:30 (CEST) \nREGISTER NOWAbout this event:\nThe final workshop of RESTORE will take place in Vienna to bring together experts on energy systems and to showcase the developments of the research project. \nThe first half of the day will include presentations of different research projects on Thermal Energy Storage and its application to Carnot Batteries. Subsequently\, the presenters will discuss the role of Thermal Energy Storage in future energy systems. \nThe second half of the day will share some of the results obtained in the RESTORE project. The technical tour will lead to the labs of TU Wien\, where the RESTORE prototype is assembled. This highly innovative Carnot Battery prototype consists of a reversible Organic Rankine Cycle system (for more information\, see press release / video) connected to a Thermochemical Energy Storage reactor (for more information\, see press release / video). At the Prospex Institute\, she works as a Project Manager and Research Associate\, where she is responsible for the coordination and implementation of international research and innovation projects. Her expertise lies in the social dimensions of sustainable natural resource management\, with a particular focus on qualitative research methods and stakeholder engagement. She contributes to the design and facilitation of participatory and transdisciplinary processes\, aiming to foster inclusive dialogue and co-creation among diverse actors. She is especially interested in how collaborative approaches can enhance the societal relevance and impact of research\, and how complex sustainability challenges can be addressed through meaningful stakeholder involvement. \nDr. Stefan Cristian Galusnyak (Universitatea Babeș-Bolyai) \n \nStefan Cristian Galusnyak is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering\, Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca. His research integrates advanced process modelling with sustainable energy systems. His work focuses on carbon capture\, utilization and storage technologies\, alternative fuels\, and environmental assessments by means of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology\, ultimately contributing to the development of low-carbon solutions. He studied Advanced Process Chemical Engineering and holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering\, being author of several peer-reviewed scientific publications. \nLucia Hörner (Steinbeis Europa Zentrum) \n \nLucia Hörner is a project manager for innovation processes at Steinbeis Europa Zentrum in Germany where she is responsible for organising the further use of results from Horizon projects. In her work\, she assesses user needs and product-market fit\, shapes sustainable business models and facilitates the development of a post project roadmap for the further use of results. Empowering project partners to make use of their intellectual property is her primary goal – also in RESTORE. Specifically\, within the Brønderslev project\, Jan Holst Rothmann was deeply involved in the technical design and control system\, as well as integration of the CSP-plant into to the overall system. Moreover\, he was in charge of the start-up and commissioning of the CSP Solar field and the control system philosophy for operation of the CSP plant together with the biomass fired boiler and ORC-system. Currently\, he is involved in the service and commissioning phase of the ongoing energy plant projects within the Aalborg CSP portfolio in Denmark. \nPresentation: RESTORE Use-Case I: Combining technologies at the Brønderslev district heating plant \nDario Alfani\, Ph.D. (Politecnico di Milano) \n \nDr. Dario Alfani is an Assistant Professor in the Energy Department at the Politecnico di Milano\, Italy\, where he lectures on Renewable Energy for the master’s degree program in Energy Engineering and is a member of the Group of Energy COnversion Systems (GECOS). His research focuses on power systems using non-conventional power cycles\, such as supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) and Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC)\, for renewable energy and waste heat recovery applications. He is also investigating innovative energy storage solutions based on thermodynamic cycles\, such as Carnot batteries and Pumped Thermal Energy Storage. IET has during the last 10 years been specializing on the topics of energy storage\, on novel thermodynamic cycles and on industrial energy systems. The spectrum of work at IET covers CSP\, sCO2 system modelling\, sensible and latent as well as TCES concepts. In RESTORE\, TU Wien is leading WP2 on a High Energy-density Thermochemical Storage for daily and seasonal Energy Storage in DHC. Andreas Werner’s research expertise lies on thermochemical energy storage\, industrial waste heat recovery\, reactive multiphase flow\, dynamic simulation of fluid-bound of power distribution systems and metal hydride storage. His current research focus is in the fields of TCES and sCO2 power cycles. He is project manager of the currently running SCARABEUS project. \nPresentation: Thermochemical Energy Storage – 1st key technology \nMarco Astolfi\, Ph.D. (Politecnico di Milano) \nDr. Marco Astolfi is a senior researcher and lecturer in the Energy Engineering Department of Politecnico di Milano. He is author of 58 scientific papers\, book chapters and conference proceedings in power conversion with non-conventional thermodynamic cycles\, multi energy systems optimization and low carbon technologies. His research interest in ORC technology started during Master Degree thesis and has been consolidated during the PhD focused on techno-economical optimization of ORC for several test cases and applications. He has played significant roles in international organizations focused on ORC and has carried out research activities with ORC manufacturers (Exergy\, Turboden\, Zuccato Energia) and companies  in ORC filed (Enel\, Edison\, LU-VE\, Saipem\, Sorgenia) leading numerical studies and on field activities focused on performance assessment of ORC power plants. \nPresentation: reversible Organic Rankine Cycle – 2nd key technology
